A lawn you’ll never have to water

I was reading an article about actor and ardent environmentalist Ed Begley.  Among some of his tips to reduce your carbon footprint was replacing your lawn with artificial grass that is made of 100% recycled materials.

In addition to the benefits of reducing your water bill, you won’t have to worry about harmful pesticides or fertilizers to make your lawn look nice and green.

Check out this site to learn more – I’m sure there are many other companies that have similar products though.

Have any of you seen this product up close?  I’d be curious to know if it really looks and feels like grass.

Going green means being environmentally friendly, not just painting things the color green. putting in artificial turf as a yard must be the LEAST green thing I’ve ever heard. There are plenty of organic ways to maintain a lawn. the best part: real, chemical free grass doesn’t just “feel” like real grass it IS real grass.

I’ve never seen it up close, but I heard of a company in Atlanta that used this same sort of material for golf greens interesting idea, I thought.

By the way, if you like Ed Begley, did you see this interview with him on TreeHugger? It’s about a year old, but thought you might like it all the same!:

@ Caitlin: thanks for the link! I’ll have to check this out… I’m not a huge fan of his, but I have been curious about how he lives his life ever since I saw some random reality show about him…

@ Galen: I know, I had the same reaction when I heard about this. It seems a bit counterintuitive to me to rip up a yard to put in a plastic one… I’m interested in learning more though.
