Kermit the Frog discusses the environmental movement.

Happy Saturday, everyone.

FEED Projects – a good cause with an eco twist

FEED BagsHave you heard of FEED Projects? It’s an organization that was started by Lauren Bush (yup, niece of GW) in 2006. FEED markets and sells FEED bags; each bag sold feeds children around the world in their schools.

The reason I bring this up is because today, May 1, a new FEED 100 bag is being launched and sold exclusively at Whole Foods stores in the US, Canada and UK.

Each purchase of a FEED 100 bag will provide 100 nutritious school meals for hungry children through the UN World Food Program.

For me, supporting a cause like this is a no-brainer, especially when you read this depressing statistic:

Almost 400 million children around the world go to bed hungry every night. In fact, every five seconds a child dies because he or she is hungry. [Source]

The nice bonus is that this bag is also eco-friendly, as it’s made of 100% cotton and sustainable burlap. You know how much we love our reusable bags at TTMYGG, so this will make a nice addition to our collection.

A lawn you’ll never have to water

I was reading an article about actor and ardent environmentalist Ed Begley.  Among some of his tips to reduce your carbon footprint was replacing your lawn with artificial grass that is made of 100% recycled materials.

In addition to the benefits of reducing your water bill, you won’t have to worry about harmful pesticides or fertilizers to make your lawn look nice and green.

Check out this site to learn more – I’m sure there are many other companies that have similar products though.

Have any of you seen this product up close?  I’d be curious to know if it really looks and feels like grass.

High Gas Prices

gas1.jpgCheck out the gas prices in San Mateo, CA – I took this picture just a few days ago when I was driving around. (How high are gas prices in your neighborhood?)

In response to the escalating gas prices, I’ve been trying to drive less – not the easiest feat if you live in an area that does not have good public transportation. I’ve taken up Paul’s advice and started walking to work. It’s great! I love that I consume less gas. My wallet loves it too. And I love the health benefit: it’s great exercise, and I feel so energized the rest of the day.

Being able to walk even 5,000 steps a day is a challenge for me (I’m in a lot of meetings during the week), so I get a thrill seeing my pedometer hit the 11,000 mark when I walk to and from work. :)

Things That Make You Go Green Calendar

Hi everyone, did you all know that we have an Events Calendar? (Look for the small gray text link that appears under the Things That Make You Go Green header, or just click here!) Props to Paul for putting this together awhile back, and for maintaining it!

Anyway, I wanted to give you all a quick heads up that there are some interesting events coming up, including a couple that the good folks from Plenty Magazine forwarded to us (thank you!):

  • Go Green Expo: the first of its kind eco-focused interactive consumer showcase, which will feature environmentally friendly products, servies and businesses in all categories for both consumers and business leaders. It will host notable speakers such as David Bach (seven-time consecutive national bestselling author and financial guru, author of the forthcoming Go Green Rich: 50 Simple Ways to Save the Earth (and Get Rich Trying)). The Go Green Expo will be held in NYC on April 26-27 – check out their site for more info.
  • Green Festivals: a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-Op America, taking place in four cities nationwide – Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC. Weekend-long events will be held where you can discover what’s next on the horizon for renewable energy, socially responsible investing, eco-fashions, eco-tourism, green building, green parenting and more. Check out their site for more info, including upcoming dates.

We are planning to check out the San Francisco Green Festival – hope to see you there…in November 2008.
