I want to talk about composting today.
Why compost? Composting helps reduce the amount of garbage you send to your local landfills. This helps reduce the burden on our landfills, many of which are rapidly filling up and closing. We compost to get rid of unused portions of raw vegetables, fruit peelings, egg shells, etc. But there’s actually a LOT more you can compost - like ashes, cardboard, newspaper, and dryer lint. Check out this site for a more complete list.
Compost is also good for the earth! It allows soil to hold more water - if your soil can hold more water, then you can reduce your water bill… Compost can also add more nutrients to the soil, which your plants will love. Because your plants will be getting good nutrients from compost, this enables you to reduce your dependence on fertilizers, saving you money and reducing contamination of nearby waterways and drinking water.
These benefits have encouraged us to compost - we started doing this a couple of years ago, and I encourage you to do so as well! In my next post, I’ll share with you how we set ours up - it was easy!
