Save the rainforests

rain forestAcross the globe, rainforest trees are being felled at an estimated 60 acres every minute. The consequences of this are serious: the extinction of plant & animal life, soil erosion, and so on. Felled trees also contribute to global warming. With deforestation, trees are typically burned at the hands of ranchers, farmers and timbermen. When this happens, more heat-trapping CO2 is released into the atmosphere. This accounts for a startling 20% of all manmade emissions. On the flip side, forests which remain healthy and intact absorb CO2 and store carbon. Many environmentalists are looking into this problem. Some have talked about a carbon trading system, where a government can earn carbon credits for avoided deforestation. These credits can then be sold to power plants, for example, who are looking to meet emission quotas. It's an interesting idea, but I'm a little skeptical that this will work. Hard to implement and enforce, but if it can be done, then more power to ya.
